The Marshal family started as minor gentry in Wiltshire being the hereditary Marshall of the King's horses.

William Marshal, 01 Earl Pembroke, started with nothing, being the younger son, rose to be become the greatest Knight of his age, serving four kings: Henry II, Richard I, John I and Henry III.

In reward for his service he married Isabel Clare, 04 Countess Pembroke in her own right. Their ten children all married well: Plantagenet x 2, Bigod, Bohun, Braose, Clare, Dunkeld (Scottish Royalty) and Ferrers.

None of his male children had male heirs. His daughters, Isabel, Sibyl and Eva had issue.
