North

divides into the North [Place], the South and the Marches (borderlands). North and South are separated by the River Trent, the third longest river in England, 185 miles, that flows in a great arc from the River Humber to the Staffordshire Moorlands. North of the Trent is moorland, sheep; Viking country for the later 11th Century. South is lowlands, arable, European oriented. Historically very different; different accents if not different language. The Marches were many: Cumberland, Westmoreland and Northumberland forming the Northern or Scottish March. Cheshire, Shropshire, Hereforshire and Gloucestershire, north to south, bounded, losely by the River Dee in north and Severn in the south. Somerset and Devon form the Western March to Cornwall.
